| Triona in Cosmic Ball attire |
My friend, Triona, was delightfully Irish. In fact, as we sat down to watch an Irish rugby game against the All-Blacks on TV, you could tell that she was wonderfully patriotic. Alas, the Irish team suffered a heavy loss, with both sides giving a lackluster performance, and, after the game, I could tell that she was visibly shaken by the result. She had been so sure of an Irish victory.
Then she told me that one of her relations had told her to be on the shoulder of the leading Irish scorer, to assist him in making the tries. And she hadn't been attentive enough to this task. :(
So I asked her to tune in with me, about what could have made a difference to the outcome.
Between us, we came up with -
- The NZ team had done a Haka before the game, to get their team cohesive and really challenge their opponents. The Irish team should have done something similar.
- The Irish team were not moving as a team: they were not spatially aware of each other or of taking winning opportunities.
- Most of all, both teams had forgotten what they were playing for. They needed 'The Spirit of the Game'. When the Spirit of the Game is invoked then it doesn't matter who wins or who loses; it doesn't matter that there is competition because the overriding feeling is that everyone is in it together - players and spectators alike. Then there is a pure joy of feeling that allows for performance of the highest excellence, for it is a collective experience.
A week later and she sent me the following email -
Have to tell you about last nights rugby game between Munster and New Zealand. Dan, Pat and I listened to the game on the radio and I couldn't believe my ears!!!
First of all, before the game, the Munster team did the Haka led by four of their NZ players after the NZ team did theirs. This is the first time this has ever been done!!!
The game was a wondrous spectacle!! The commentators talked about the immense intensity and lightening pace of the game. There was a sense that nobody could believe what was happening!! The crowds were going crazy, the commentator described them as 'going ballistic!' They said that the Munster team were playing way beyond themselves and were being lifted by the crowds and the occasion. I thought one of the commentators was going to get a heart attack with the excitement and with the effort it took him to keep commentating.
Towards the end they said that the score was insignificant and that this game would be talked about for the next 30 years! As it happened Munster led until the last 3 minutes when NZ got a try and won by 2 points. Somehow that didn't seem to matter!
After the game, emails flooded into the studio from Irish people in different parts of the world who had listened to the game on the radio - from what was read out, it was a truly transformational experience for many! This is one of many examples of consciousness magic that I've seen happen, over and over again. It just needs us to listen to what wants to happen; to be attentive to the possibilities of amazing outcomes, and to know that we have the power to effect change without the need to satisfy personal desires.
As I said to Triona, "you need to believe that you made that happen, that you had the connection to your countrymen and evoked the Spirit of the Game for them".
And now, perhaps, it's the time to evoke The Spirit of the World and bring that fully into our lives. Heralding a time of global connectivity and contribution - and amazing excellence. Time to source the magic!
